In the previous post I talked about the background and mentioned some examples of green value within CSR. Readers who are unfamiliar with this field are advised to read up on my first post before going into this post. The next obstacle towards a greener future, measuring the effect of CSR, can be handled in many ways.
During my research for this blog post I stumbled upon Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI), an NPO for environmental sustainability. They have developed several tools that could improve how companies attack the green challenges. I looked at their Sustainability Map (http://www.gemi.org/sustainabilitymap/) and their Metrics Navigator (http://www.gemi.org/metricsnavigator/) and it looks promising. I’d advise interested readers to have a look. The Metrics Navigator follows many of the same thoughts as Figge et al (2002 Business, Strategy, and the Environment 11,269–284. From: http://www.sustainabilitymanagement.net/public/04%20The%20Sustainability%20Balanced%20Scorecard.pdf) in combining the Balanced Scorecard approach to strategy and measurements to CSR. Those are some of the ways to valuate and measure green initiatives. Is your company doing this differently or have success stories you would like to share with us at RecycleMatch?
Is it worth it? We would say YES. Creating a sustainable environment is one of the biggest challenges we have ahead. The industry agrees. We have already mentioned the MIT Sloan article “The Business of Sustainability: What It Means to Managers Now” in an earlier blog post (http://www.recyclematch.com/news/eight-totally-awesome-things-i-learned-about-business-and-sustainability-at-the-opportunity-green-conference-this-past-weekend/) and recently Accenture published a study placing sustainability in focus for high performance companies among the Fortune 1000 companies (https://microsite.accenture.com/sustainability/Pages/driving_value_sustainability.aspx), both recommended reading. RecycleMatch is working to provide thought leadership as well as actionable services that demonstrate leadership in practice. If you have any feedback or suggestions please let us know.
